Home Wine Cellar On A Budget

Building a custom wine cellar in your home is much easier than most people think. It doesn’t take a special room set aside in your mansion, attended to by servants and intended to dazzle your guests as you host high society wine tasting parties. The reality is that a wine cellar can be created almost anywhere and for less money than most would have you believe.

Where To Build Your Budget Wine Cellar

A custom budget wine cellar can be made in a variety of places. The best place to make a wine cellar would be in a underground room, hence the name. Underground rooms, like basements, tend to maintain a constant temperature all year which is important when storing and aging wine. Of course, many of the best wince cellars also have wine cellar cooler units to maintain a perfect balance of temperature and moisture. This can be mimicked with a cheap stand alone air conditioner for a fraction the price. If you have a decent sized basement, then likely you already have almost everything you need to start your own budget wine cellar!

The people who have large underground basements in their house that can be converted into a custom wine cellar probably make up a very small portion of the world. Most of us don’t have cellars in our houses. Many of us, especially those curious about budget wine cellars, don’t even have houses. Wine enthusiasts can be found in every walk of life. If you live in an apartment or small home which doesn’t have a basement, you still have options. Cashing out your life savings is not necessarily one of them.

What To Consider When Constructing A Wine Cellar

There are three things to be considered when storing wine: Temperature, humidity, and light. A truly custom wine cellar doesn’t even have to be in a cellar or basement, it can be in a closet or under your stair case. Any room that gives you the ability to control those three important factors can serve as a budget wine cellar. Likely the only things you would have to purchase are some wine racks, a temperature and humidity gauge, and a stand alone air conditioner or heater and dehumidifier.

Store your wine in a horizontal position to prevent the wine and cork from drying out. Some form of wine cellar rack system helps. Maintain a constant cool temperature, neither hot nor cold. Maintain the correct humidity levels with your air conditioner/dehumidifier (usually in the range of 55%-70%). Be careful you do not raise the humidity too high as it will promote mold growth. Mold is a big problem in many poorly built wine cellars. Be sure to keep the exposure to light to a minimum for optimum wine storage as well.

A custom wine cellar doesn’t have to cost thousands of dollars, you can build your own budget custom wine cellar in your home quite easily.
