A personally designed custom wine cellar is many a wine connoisseur’s dream. It is a possession that nurtures their true love, wine collecting, and more importantly wine drinking. A well designed custom cellar can enrich wine.  Designing and customizing your wine cellar is complex. Factors such as temperature, humidity, and bottle positioning must be accounted for.  What do you need to know to do it right? Wines thrive in a dark, dry, and cool environment.

Custom Wine Cellar Temperature

The key is temperature maintenance. Although, your wine cellar does not have to below ground, many will choose to do so to keep the cellar cool. It is the traditional way to control temperature before air conditioning. It suffices, depending on local.  Either way, the ideal goal is a dry 50°- 55°F. However, a consistent temperature between 45°F - 70°F is acceptable. The idea is to not have drastic changes that will scar the wine.

Controlling the temperature will allow wine to retain its taste and flavor, as well as prevent it from spoiling.  Of course, variations come depending on your wine collection. Air conditioning is a preferred method by some because of its ability to regulate not only the temperature but the humidity. Also, remember to keep as much sunlight out of the room as possible.

Storing Wine In A Custom Wine Cellar

Wine needs to be stored in a horizontal position so that the wine stays in contact with the cork, thus preventing the wine from drying. When selecting a wine rack keep this in mind. One can choose to exercise their creative skills and arrange for their custom designs to be built using standard racks, or custom designed ones. Another option is hiring a professional to get everything just right.

Custom built wine racks are great because you are not bound to standard sizes and can tailor it to your space. On the down side, they are very expensive. For a cheaper option, consider wine cellar cabinets that run typically in the low thousands. Considering that the value of some of your wine collection will grow exponentially, it may be well worth the price. You may even want to upgrade later.

Custom Wine Cellar Accessories

Wine accessories such as wine dispensers, decorative corkscrews, wine coolers and uncorking machines add personal and customized touches to your cellar. Make the space yours. The accessories for wine are innumerable. So find what appeals to you and integrate it. A good opportunity for personal design décor is in choosing the traditional small tasting table just outside the cellar. After all, it is where you will sit and reap the rewards of your hard work.
